America alone consumes over 100 billion gallons/day of water for domestic use and for agriculture. This is approximately equivalent to the flow rate of 50 Mississippi Rivers. 
A significant percentage of this water is outright wasted. More is used very inefficiently or very ineffectively. Why so? Because water has traditionally been priced very low, providing very little incentive to monitor, control, reduce or conserve water. However, in today’s world of rising populations, climate change and extended droughts, and aging, neglected or insufficient infrastructure, water shortage have become much more common and can begin the tear the fabric of modern civilized living apart. We can’t live without water.
WATER DIMMER has been created to help solve this very significant problem of how do we implement water conservation on a very large scale, in a structured manner, benefit and recognize the individual contributors, in a cost effective and timely manner, without becoming mired in bureaucratic gridlock, indifference or heavy-handed and arbitrary rationing. We all know that today, it is extremely challenging for large government undertake grand endeavors that will benefit all of society.
Individual actions can still benefit all of society. Today it is now possible for groups of individuals who are focused and determined to judiciously apply technology along with the proper attitudes and behaviors to achieve major undertakings.
Essence of the Challenge
WATER DIMMER wants to try a new way and create a new mindset. We would like to introduce the 2 Billion Gallon Challenge as a way to get individual Americans to proactively reduce water consumption by 2 billion gallons per day, a flow rate equivalent to the flow of the Mississippi River. This represents a modest, realistic but still very significant reduction of 2% of our water consumption and it should help to think and move us in a new direction.
WATER DIMMER wants to socialize this challenge and allow individuals to contribute and achieve recognition for their contribution by joining the 2 Billion Gallon Challenge by using WATER DIMMER and tracking their progress online and sharing their achievements as they see fit.
The most effective way to control the potential for water shortages is conserve and reduce existing water consumption. Proactive water conservation is very cost effective, only requiring three key components. The three components are to:
1. Monitor, control and automate water consumption activities
2. Modify and optimize water consumption behavior to conserve
3. Evaluate and optimize water consumption equipment performance to conserve
First consider longer term investments in the future don’t be obsessed with slam-dunk, super-short payback periods. Think about actions for the greater good, now and for the future.
